Description
Emissions of nitrous oxide may comprise up to 80% of water utility carbon footprints and will require multiple approaches to reduce. Within the UK water sector, the £310m net zero enhancement fund includes considerable scope for N2O mitigation -including technologies which have not yet been applied successfully in the UK like N2O destruction.
This presentation will provide an overview of the evidence for N2O destruction and successful case studies from Switzerland and Denmark where thermal and catalytic processes are currently being applied for N2O reduction, including as part of carbon offsetting programmes funding N2O abatement.
An overview of the current state of play in proven N2O destruction using regenerative thermal oxidation (RTO) will be provided. In addition ongoing trial work results which show potential for catalytic processes in Denmark will be presented. The presentation and paper will present destruction data, results from full scale multi-year installations and focus on the selection of sites and process units to target for N2O destruction and key design and operational considerations. The presentation will consider associated cost and operational considerations - based on real data and first hand experience from proven N2O destruction solutions.
