Description
Keep your bugs happy not by let them produce nitrous oxide but create the circumstances in which they, without any stress can convert the nitrogen from the influent. This will lead to a good effluent quality and low nitrous oxide emissions. The first results from the Dutch acceleration program on nitrous oxide show case that within the existing infrastructure improvements in the effluent quality and nitrous oxide emission are possible. Good maintenance of your installation like keeping the tank and aeration elements clean for an effective oxygen transfer, adjustments of your current aeration and or recirculation control can stabilize your oxygen concentration and or enables you to maximize your nitrate recirculation. Modernize your current installation with relatively simple measures like extending your aeration capacity and/or recirculation capacity and buffer your influent to flatten the ammonium load to the installation. In case renovation or extension of your installation is required it’s worthwhile to consider converting the installation to a low loaded plant with full nitrogen removal as denitrification acts as a natural sink for nitrous oxide. All measures are beneficial for happy bugs and low emissions and a good effluent quality!
