Description
Market demand for a diverse range of chemicals to meet our everyday needs has meant our understanding of the potential environmental impact of micropollutants and emerging contaminants has needed to keep pace. However, the emerging contaminants of today were not necessarily apparent even ten years ago, so how does the Water Industry prepare for AMP9 and beyond?
Source control is arguably the most important step to reducing chemicals entering our environment. EU regulations such as REACH and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP) carefully balance economics as well as carbon costs. However, despite these supply chain product controls there remains a need to continue to develop advanced technologies with an emphasis on retrofit solutions to manage legacy pollutants and pharmaceuticals.
Regulators and water companies need to make informed investment decisions based on robust scientific evidence. This presentation will discuss how the Water Industry is responding to this challenge via the collaborative programme of research coordinated by UKWIR. AMP8 marks the start of the research being undertaken for the Chemical Investigations Programme 4. New approaches are assessing sources to groundwater, modelling chemicals in estuaries, across sludge technologies as well as wetland removal and potential impacts on the environment including fish.
