Description

The Alternative Approaches to Phosphorus Removal on Rural Wastewater Treatment Works (Alt-P) project, funded by OFWAT through the Water Breakthrough Challenge initiative, included evaluation of both Electrocoagulation (EC) and Natural Coagulants (NC).  The Power & Water Soneco® EC system showed significant benefits over its competitors and although NC appeared unable to precipitate phosphorus, its other abilities were clearly demonstrated.

On the basis of these findings Power & Water decided to conduct their own laboratory-scale experiments, determining that Soneco® and NC in combination could deliver low P and low iron residuals; calculations also indicated that the operational and capital cost savings were likely to be significant.  Consequently, it was agreed with United Utilities (leaders of the Alt-P project) that the Soneco® and NC combination be piloted in the final weeks of the trial work, this proving beyond doubt the benefits were significant.

Take-up of the Soneco® + NC combination has been rapid with (at the time of writing) two full-scale installations operational, another two imminent and a fifth due by March.  The presentation will look at the results obtained during all phases of the work and highlight the advantages of uptake to the Water Industry during AMP8.
