Description
This study investigates the efficacy of combining organic coagulant Hydrex 62925 with iron sulphate for phosphorus (P) removal at WwTWs. The demand for sustainable, cost-effective P removal methods has led to exploring organic coagulants as alternatives to metal-based coagulants. Hydrex 62925 was evaluated with iron sulphate to assess their synergistic effects on P removal.
This research is part of the United Utilities-led innovation project “Alternative Approaches to Phosphorus Removal at Rural WwTWs” funded by the Ofwat innovation fund. The performance of Hydrex 62925 alone was compared to its combination with iron sulphate at different ratios. Results determined the combination allows for effective P removal, enhanced solids removal and also captures excess iron, potentially negating the need for tertiary solids removal technology on low P drivers.
This study highlights the potential of integrating organic coagulants like Hydrex 62925 with traditional ferric-based coagulants for enhanced P removal, offering both environmental and economic benefits. Evidence will be shared from several AMP7 schemes across United Utilities showing promising results, with P removal rates as low as 0.25 mg/l. The AMP8 deployment within United Utilities will also be covered by this presentation
