Description

Systematic studies on ultra-low phosphorus removal through filtration processes are still limited. Particularly, the fractionation of phosphorus plays a key role for achieving ultra-low phosphorus levels (< 0.1 mg/L). The concentration of soluble non-reactive phosphorus (sNRP) is crucial in determining the lowest achievable total phosphorus (Total-P) concentration, with coagulation only partially removing sNRP. Evaluations conducted during the Chemical Investigation Programme 2 (CIP2) highlighted the effectiveness of the Mecana Pile Cloth Media Filter (PCMF) in achieving ultra-low phosphorus levels when treating a range of effluents.

In the eight years following CIP2, Eliquo Hydrok has demonstrated success in the UK with Europe following suit. With over 150 phosphorus removal installations across the UK, this presentation will present data from some of the most recent UK projects and highlight the progress made in achieving ultra-low phosphorus standards across Europe. This study evaluates advanced phosphorus removal, consistently achieving concentrations below 0.2 and 0.1 mg·L⁻¹. It will also explore phosphorus fractionation and the synergies associated with removing micropollutants, microplastics and particulate chemical oxygen demand providing insights to support the obligations of AMP8 and beyond.
