Description
To aid transition to a Circular Economy, there is an opportunity to reuse grit from Wastewater Treatment Works which traditionally is landfilled as waste – contributing to landfill emissions of greenhouse gases and at great cost given increasing landfill fees.
For the past 5 years, Scottish Water and partners, including Jacobs have explored the subject of grit recovery and reuse. This has included field trials, working with the recycled aggregate sector in Scotland, SEPA and exploring cost and carbon impacts of centralised and site-level approaches.
This presentation and paper will summarise the journey so far, considering grit quantities, quality and trial work to date as well as options for site-level enhancement of grit recovery and washing from global technology leaders as well as options for centralised treatment plants. It will highlight global case studies in grit processing and reuse and present Scottish Water’s work to date estimating comparative cost, carbon and operational impacts, as well as highlighting the importance of collaborative working with regulators, vendors and end use markets for a circular recovered product.
