Description

We will present Pont-y-felin Lane, an initiative by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, Morgan Sindall and Arup that uses a nature-based approach to address spills from a combined sewer overflow (CSO) that discharges into the Afon Lwyd.

In a UK first, our novel solution uses an aerated reedbed and integrated constructed wetland (ICW) system to remove pollutants from the CSO during rainfall, before discharging clean water into the river. Although it uses industry proven technology, this two-stage approach is pioneering in its application on a CSO.

This project delivers a broad range of positive river-health outcomes and wider benefits for nature and the community. Our multiple outcomes approach was embedded in our benefits assessment and decision-making process. Learnings from Pont-y-felin are contributing to greater investment in nature-based solutions during the next major water investment period (2025 – 2030) in Wales.

Our presentation will cover the key design and build considerations and reflect on the lessons learnt from undertaking this innovative scheme. With the scheme now in operation, we think sharing these details with the attendees will be eye opening and support several of the 2025 themes including Catchment Approaches and Nature Based Solutions, Spills, CSOs & Stormwater.
