Description
With ever more obvious impacts of climate changes on water systems, in particular in terms of surface water quality and weather events, the water industry is under much pressure to build the resilience required to face those. While many approaches focus on building resilience per se, via capital projects, our presentation will focus on operational strategies to deliver flexibility and build adaptative resilience of existing works. This can provide a first level of resilience and response to events here & now, with fast-to-implement solutions, which will in turn reduce the need for capital-based resilience.
Examples will include a variety of examples using advanced real-time control implemented full scale:
1- Building flexibility across 2 connected wastewater treatment sites: optimising process at site level, as well as the by-pass between sites, based on capacity, performance and treatment cost
2- Using stormwater tanks for smart management of incoming load on the biological treatment, based on the influent profile (including trade effluent) and hydraulic variations
3- Specific aeration control loops to enable faster reaction when high rain events occur, and recovery of nominal process conditions post-event
