Description

Monkmoor Sewage Treatment Works in Shrewsbury underwent the UK's first large-scale installation of Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) technology to enhance ammonia removal. The project involved installing 48 OxyMem MABR units into the existing anoxic zones to meet the growth driver. This retrofit solution provided CAPEX and OPEX savings over building new ASP lanes. This presentation will focus on how MABR was implemented into the existing process, with a focus on how MMB, OxyMem, Severn Trent and key subcontractors collaborated to develop a solution that could be installed whilst maintaining a live ASP. Our considerations and decisions on the installation methodology and operational requirements for MABR will be presented. We will also look at the ancillaries and how these were integrated into the existing process. The project, valued at £8m, was completed while keeping the existing process live, demonstrating the feasibility and efficiency of MABR technology in large-scale wastewater treatment applications.
