The presentation summarises the demonstration of Haskoning’s PURE optimisation platform at the Whitlingham Sludge Treatment Centre (STC), one of Anglian Water’s largest Bio P facilities in the East of England. The project evaluates PURE’s ability to manage fluctuations in influent carbonaceous and ammonia loads and optimise Bio P processes to enhance resilience and compliance, while delivering energy savings, reducing chemical consumption, and lowering process emissions. Ahead of the early 2026 trial, collaboration between Anglian Water’s Innovation and Optimisation teams established the technical and operational requirements for implementing PURE. This included ensuring the reliability of key hardware—such as air valves, sensors, flow controls, and power monitoring equipment—and developing robust cybersecurity protocols to enable secure remote system access during the demonstration. As Anglian Water has a regulatory commitment in AMP8 to achieve a 30% reduction in nitrous oxide emissions across multiple sites, the project also incorporates an assessment of emissions impacts using Unisense N₂O monitoring and Aquamonitrix nitrate–nitrite sensing technologies. Establishing correlations between nitrate-nitrite and N2O production, offers new approaches for screening the risk and control options for N2O emissions. The insights generated will support innovation and optimisation teams across the water sector prioritise benefits from PURE within a structured, hierarchical decision making framework.
