Description

Data Science will shape the winners and losers in United Kingdom’s (UK’s) Water industry. The UK water industry, like every major industry, often underutilises the data that they have produced already. The two biggest risks faced by UK water companies are the failure to supply water to the faucets in people’s homes and the pollution of water courses. This work showcases the use machine Learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), both fundamental in data science, to show, in very simple terms, a perspective of real pollution risk for the largest UK water companies. This could be used for wastewater treatment asset planning/strategy. This work is part of environmental safety, a part of process safety engineering. It maps the complete framework that numerically gives each water company's pollution risk tolerance. This is based on real and open-source data. Operating companies are going to get the biggest gains of ML and AI by focussing on its practical applications to solve real problems. This makes this work, a must, for review by ever water company in the UK and beyond. This work maps a data-driven path towards Zero Pollution by managing and mitigating polluting storm and rainfall events, culmination in combined sewer overflows (CSOs).
