Name
Scaling Nitrous Oxide monitoring in AMP8: site prioritisation, deployment lessons, and emissions performance at Severn Trent Water
Authors
Alex Harrison, Severn Trent Water, UK
Description

Severn Trent Water has successfully deployed Year 1 of our AMP8 monitoring programme with continuous N₂O monitors at an additional 21 wastewater treatment sites. This presentation provides a detailed update on the programme’s design, site selection methodology, technological learning, and how this aligns with and supports the wider AMP8 programme. A site prioritisation matrix was developed considering; enhancing emissions monitoring coverage (PE based), developing understanding, weighing relative strategic value, practicalities of site installs, and crucially a regression analysis model using long-term emissions data from 8 previously monitored sites. This live matrix shapes our monitoring phases and AMP8 intervention planning. Installation of the first wave of systems has yielded important lessons on technology choice, supplier developments, installation feasibility, and integration with existing systems. Practical examples will highlight issues and improvements found during procurement, deployment and commissioning. The monitoring programme is integral to Severn Trent’s wider optimisation and emissions reduction strategy. Early N₂O data is already informing operational interventions, supporting innovation trials and strengthening future decision-making. It is important to demonstrate our latest view on how the data we are collecting allows better targeting of mitigation levers and enhanced performance and regulatory confidence vs ODI and PCD targets. This session provides a transparent, practical update on Severn Trent’s expansion of their large scale N₂O monitoring in AMP8 and offers insight relevant to all utilities planning similar programmes.
