Description

Thames Water has set an ambitious long‑term vision to manage 7,500 hectares of land through Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), reducing flood risk to 187,000 properties and contributing to the reduction of storm overflows across the region. Delivering SuDS at this scale requires a fundamental shift from traditional infrastructure approaches toward collaborative, nature‑based solutions embedded within local communities. This presentation outlines how Thames Water’s Surface Water Management Programme (SWMP) has evolved over AMP7, delivering 74 projects in partnership with over 30 councils, charities, and community organisations. Through strategic alignment with planning authorities, a dedicated delivery team, and clear funding mechanisms, the programme has demonstrated that co‑delivered SuDS can unlock land, share costs, and generate broader public value while providing 18,000m³ of storage and attenuating runoff over more than 90 hectares. The presentation will showcase diverse case studies from schools, housing estates, highways, parks, and innovative flood‑storage projects. They will illustrate how partnership‑led delivery can scale SuDS effectively. It will also reflect on lessons learned, partner feedback, and how these insights are shaping a strengthened approach for AMP8, including expanded delivery streams, improved standards, and enhanced data to support storm overflow, growth, and flooding drivers. The talk highlights how building trust, aligning policy, and fostering innovation are essential to achieving SuDS at the scale required for climate resilience by 2050.
