Name
Nitrate removal by selective EDR-treatment (Electro Dialyses Reversal)
Authors

Description

Horticultural wastewater in the Netherlands contains significant loads of crop protection agents and dissolved nutrients, posing risks to surface and groundwater quality. Effective treatment is essential to meet stringent environmental regulations and promote sustainable horticultural practices. Initial treatment focuses on the removal of crop protection agents through a combination of advanced physical-chemical processes. These methods break down or capture persistent pesticide residues. During the pilot trial at an existing wastewater treatment facility in the Netherlands, we demonstrated that ElectroDialysis Reversal (EDR) is highly effective for the removal of nitrate after the reduction of chemical contaminants. Removing up to 96% of the nitrate from the treated waste water, whilst operating at a TDS reduction of 75%.
