Name
Micropollutants and emerging contaminants; treatment through tailored activated carbon
Authors
Rumman Ahmed, Arq, UK
Description

In this session, we will discuss the effective capture and removal of micropollutants (MPs) and PFAS using advanced powdered activated carbons (PACs) to meet the European Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive’s (EUWWTD) 80 wt% elimination requirement. By characterizing the physiochemical properties of MPs, Arq PACs were tailored with optimized porosity and surface features to enhance removal efficiency.  These new PAC solutions are vital for meeting the upcoming mandatory 4th stage wastewater treatment regulations in Europe, highlighting the need for specially designed activated carbons to comply with stringent standards.  Through examples of priority and emerging applications, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the design and application of activated carbons from the perspective of a producer.
